What is Endodontic Retreatment?
A damaged or infected tooth that does not fully heal from a root canal therapy may need endodontic retreatment. At Made Ya Smile, our experienced dentist recognizes the symptoms of a serious infection, such as pain or discomfort in the jaw, and works to correct the issue at his facility. For some patients in Missouri City, TX, a new infection may develop in the tooth or either of the accessory canals. Endodontic retreatment is similar to root canal therapy as both require the cleaning and disinfecting of the internal pulp of the tooth. If you are exhibiting signs of infection, contact our clinic right away so our dentist can fully assess the situation.

Do I Need Endodontic Retreatment?
Patients with a root canal-treated tooth may show signs of a recurring or completely new infection. Symptoms include pain or discomfort in the tooth or jaw, especially when biting down. You may also notice a blister-like lesion on the gums or temperature sensitivity. Made Ya Smile will do everything we can to protect the integrity of your tooth with endodontic retreatment. In some cases, an apicoectomy (root removal) may be the best way to restore your health. A custom consultation at our clinic will help you know whether or not this procedure is right for your dental needs.
How is Endodontic Retreatment Performed?
Our dentist performs endodontic retreatment with sedation options to help you feel more relaxed while in our office. Once we are ready to begin, we will numb the treatment area for a high level of comfort, then reopen the tooth to take out the previous filling. Made Ya Smile will then clear the pulp of any infected tissue and disinfect the area, also taking the time to check the accessory canals to treat them as well. After this is completed, our dentist will add new filling material in the center of the tooth, then place a new sedative filling over the tooth so it can begin healing. We may place a crown or other restoration type to protect the tooth as the infection resolves.
Recovery from Endodontic Retreatment
Similar to a root canal therapy, Made Ya Smile recommends resting for a few days and avoiding any intensive physical activity so you have plenty of time to properly heal. Our staff will provide you with helpful instructions on cleaning and caring for the treated tooth moving forward. Our dentist may suggest over-the-counter pain medication to manage any pain or discomfort and may provide a prescription for antibiotics to help keep the infection from returning. It's essential to schedule regular appointments for cleanings at Made Ya Smile so we can continue to assess the health of the tooth and monitor your progress.
Does Insurance Cover Endodontic Retreatment?
Before we begin any procedures, the financial or administrative staff at Made Ya Smile will contact your provider to see if your dental insurance covers the cost of endodontic retreatment. While most PPO plans will give you some benefits, we can file claims on your behalf and calculate any out-of-pocket costs. To make costs more affordable, our team also offers many payment options at our facility, including easy financing with our third-party partner CareCredit®.
